In honour of Valentine’s Day Spottiswoode has chosen to share a rare love song.
But it wasn’t supposed to be that way…
“I was in the middle of a very frustrating time in my life. Problems everywhere. Murphy’s Law on steroids! One night I decided I needed to write a song to vent my anger. The title of the tune would be It’s Always Something. The next afternoon I sat at the piano and heard myself play a pretty five-note melody. I searched for some words to go with it and remembered my song title. Except there was nothing angry about this tune. It was the complete opposite!”
It’s Always Something is the tenth track on Spottiswoode’s forthcoming collection, IT WASN’T IN THE SCRIPT, an album about the joys and humiliations of fatherhood and getting older. Most of the songs are either about his daughter, Sophie Lee, or they include her singing backing vocals. This tune is the exception. It’s for and about her mother.
The recording features Brian Geltner on drums; Drew Hart on bass; Kenny White on keyboards; Spottiswoode on vocals and Fender Stratocaster. The track was recorded and produced by Peter Fox at Brooklyn Pearl in New York and mixed and mastered by Michael Scherchen at the Mix Factory UK.
The video was shot in London by Clare Elliott. Although Spott feels guilty about playing the piano on camera - it’s Kenny White who performs on the actual track - he’s trying his best to console himself. “I wrote the tune on piano so it’s only half a lie. I hope Kenny forgives me!”
It’s Always Something will be available on primary streaming services from April 21st 2026 along with the full album IT WASN’T IN THE SCRIPT.
